Why does everyone make such a big deal about Hurricane Katrina?

I'm sick of the whole Katrina story myself.... You got hit by a hurricane in a area known for hurricane activity. They should have been prepared. When Hurricane Andrew hit Florida we had no power or running water for weeks. I didn't bitchh that no one came to save my asss. I didn't bitchh when I had to drink out of the bath tub we had filled for extra water. No one paid for the damage to my home, no one paid my electric bill for a year, no one gave me a hotel room or a fema credit card!! I got a couple gallons of water and a bag of rice....kinda hard to boil when you have no power!!! Still I didn't complain. Get over it..... Seems to me like a democratic scandal to undermine president bush to make it seem like he made some kind of gross mistake... Well nothing was said when Clinton was in office and and same thing happened... Point made...

Why does everyone make such a big deal about Hurricane Katrina?
Wow, sick of the whole "Hurricane Katrina story"....interesting. I'm sick of it too...I get to see it everyday!! I live in south Mississippi. Most of your complaints hold partially true to NEW ORLEANS...not Mississippi. We didn't ask for everyone to do the walk for us...we stood back up with the help of others who were kind enough to donate their time and money. To them, I say thank you... Hurricane Katrina makes Andrew look like a little drizzle... Everything is GONE...there weren't any buildings to speak of after the storm...and you're mad at us? Of course this is a hurricane prone area...last storm we really had was Hurricane Georges in 1998. We've dodged a lot, but we get the big bad ones...Camille and Katrina...wow! However, maybe I can move to CA where they have earthquakes or the midwest where they have tornadoes. Maybe I can move to the northeast and participate in the blizzards....you see...no matter where I live...there's going to be a natural disaster waiting to happen. And the way it works is help your fellow citizens in this wonderful country so we can all stand strong again. When you have a hurricane hit you, we'll be there to pick you back up too.

I'm tired of hearing about New Orleans too...a direct hit would have leveled the superdome, much as the entire MS Gulf Coast was leveled. It's about race and silly things now. Louisiana can't even figure out who to blame yet, and Mississippi is steadily rebuilding. We're not there yet; and it will be a while, but it'll be great again. When another storm comes in 30 years to top Katrina...I only hope the people are still as kind as they were this time to come to our aid.

The Sun Herald came out with a special issue of our local paper today about Katrina...48 hours before our lives changed forever. The list of the dead was there...ages 2+..dead! They even had a write up on each and every person...

I would expect someone who knows about hurricanes to be a little more considerate. It's not about complaining. I saw my own relatives work hard all day at their jobs just to come home and start working on rebuilding their homes...a daily routine for many...for months. I see it everyday. I drive by the FEMA trailers on the beach that house families of 4 and 5...my heart is theirs. Why can't yours be?
Reply:And you still don't get it.Points made...zero
Reply:I'm sick of everybody bicthing and complain what happen who did what, everybody better get off their butts and look what coming this week It is ERNESTO. that right, another cane coming to the gulf are the residents ready ? No , they are not they are to busy complaining about Katrina. So get off your lazy butts and shut your mouth and get the frick out of town.RESIDENTS OF NO. DON'T STAY AND PARTY LIKE THE LAST TIME, THE COAST GUARD DID NOT FORGET THAT YOU HAD SHOOT AT THEM, AND FOUGHT TO STAY IN FILTHY WATERS. SO GET OUT NOW YOU HAVE ABOUT 4 DAY HEAD START.

THANK YOU

THIS TIME I WON'T HELP. YOU.

I'm sorry i did not meant to be rude to other vitims in the gulf but NO is the worst. for not listeing to the warnings.
Reply:You make me sick. How can you turn a horrible tragedy into a political statement to back someone - whether it be Republican or Democrat. Yes, Florida gets hit by hurricanes. It is a tragedy none the less. People made a "big deal" out of the historic catagory 5 hurricanes that hit Florida, and people did their best to send anything Florida needed. In New Orleans, big mistakes were made. Many people died because of it. I DON'T GIVE A RAT'S @$$ WHOSE FAULT IT WAS!!!!!
Reply:Because FEMA is suppodsed to help. AND it wasnt all the hurricanes fault, it was also the city's levvy things breaking!
Reply:your point is only made to the poop heads like you. Oh, your jealous of all the attention the hurricane victims are getting ~ poor baby. stop whining! get a life!
Reply:but you don't under stand, these people did nothing before Katrina hit,I live in Georgia the were giving the Katrina people don't want to call them victims because they are not they are moochers I live in Georgia the government gave them debit cards, there were poor black victims going out and buying things live expensive pocketbooks expensive shoes just a lot of junk.We cant help people that don't have the education or the know how to help them self. They are lazy and don't want to help themselves so I guest we will Be there handing out until some one stands up and says this is enough.it want be the Government they are to .scared.
Reply:Are you serious!!!Personally, I feel that the correct protocol was not taken. Many residents of New Orleans did not have power up to 10 hours before the storm so how could one possibly evacuate. Also, it was not the hurricane that caused all the disaster it was the lack of responsibility of the engineer who waited 40 + years to adhere to the codes and upkeep of the levees. When the levees broke that's when all hell broke loose. That's why people blame the govt. Do you believe if the Statue of liberty needed upkeep or maintenance it will be ignored for 30 + years or even the White House. i don't think so? Ignoring the levees was just the political agenda of the big time builders to rebuild New Orleans as a Casino district. they were just awaiting something to destroy and clear as many poor and minorities as they could without paying them off to move. Gentrification, look it up!!

Imagine your 16 year old cousin picked up for a possible suspect for vandalism on Aug. 28, 2005 just because he fit the description of a young black male with a red t-shirt and blue jeans. He sat in a holding cell for 48 hours. Due to all the drama with Katrina he was not given the phone call nor did he get evacuated. As the water grew him and other whom were stopped or detained by the police just set in a cell while the water was rising. They all drowned many were not even convicted nor did they committ crimes (runaways, profiled suspects) See the media left out so many things and you have the audacity to say its whining many people died slow and painfully, watching there lives pass by why the water rose. Our gov't who say the work for all people have their political agendas and the caliber of people whom made up New Orleans did not make their agenda!! And Katrina was an aid in whipping out what they see as the bottom percentage!! President Clinton also did not go to the rescue of other countries before he did the people whom elected him in office. Bush will personally fly is jet to a country where he can benefit from oil, or networking with his family.
Reply:SORRY THAT YOU HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE. I GUESS THAT IS WHAT LIFE IS ABOUT. HOWEVER, YOUR QUESTION SHOWS WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE US - THE THOUGHT THAT EVERY MAN SHOULD BE FOR HIMSELF. YOU HAVE NO SENSE OF COMMUNITY. WHEN EVERY ONE OF YOU IS OUT FOR HIMSELF NOBODY WILL BE LEFT TO LOOK AFTER THE COMMON INTEREST. OF COURSE, BY THAT TIME, NOBODY WILL BE PAYING TAXES AND YOU'LL HAVE THE WILD WEST ALL OVER AGAIN.

AS FOR UNDERMINING BUSH, HE IS DOING THAT TO HIMSELF QUITE NICELY WITHOUT ANYONE'S HELP.

INCIDENTALLY, 180,000 JOBS HAVE BEEN LOST FROM NEW ORLEANS. DID THAT HAPPEN TO YOUR COMMUNITY?
Reply:well... the problem is... a large city turned into a deep lake for about 2 weeks... did that happen during Andrew?

and FEMA helped a lot of people during Andrew with all those things you mentioned... I remember... and they talked about it on the news all the time too...

you would think that people that have had disaster strike them so personally wouldn't be so insensitive to other disaster areas... especially when quite a few people died?

oh well, you're from Fla... that pretty much explains it...

maybe the next hurricane will turn your home into a lake and nobody will care... just like you don't...

MAN... SO MANY PEOPLE WENT TO HELP DURING ANDREW... APPARENTLY THAT WAS A MISTAKE, SINCE NO ONE REMEMBERED... I THINK I'LL STAY ON THE COUCH THE NEXT TIME A HURRICANE KNOCKS ON THE DOOR OF FLORIDA... THIS IS A HUGE JINX FOR YOURSELF...
Reply:The good people or N.O. are not complaining. They are rebuilding and will get it done with or without any help. The crud is complaining and the media is doing their best do dig things out. Of, course anyone is going to be upset when they just lost their home and way of life, if you ask them.

The thing about Katrina is that most government response was really stupid and inept. FEMA just got in the way. Things didn't go right until it was handed over to the National Guard which we had before FEMA. The creation of FEMA was just a political response to previous disasters so the politicians could say that they were doing something. We don't even need FEMA. Just call in the Guard. People are gouing to suffer when disasters like this hit no matter what you do but, the Guard has the logistics experience to get available help there the fastest and most effectively.

Most of the problem stems from the media. They have to magnify conflict and hysteria to get their ratings up so they can sell their ad spots for higher prices. They did not report the political games that the mayor and governor played which resulted in most of the deaths. it was not Bush, this time. They also have dropped the story about the political corruption that caused money targetted for the levees to be spent on other things. They know which side their bread is buttered on.

The media is our biggest enemy now.
Reply:Because it was the worse natural catastrophe to ever hit this country... and a huge and important port city just went under water.
Reply:I totally agree with you.

The whole "relief thing" if blown WAY out of proportion. They Had 3 days warning to evacuate. Yet some of the did not. Who is to blame for that?

They build a city below sea level and build a crappy dam, who is to blame for that?

Sure the damage was worse then in other hurricanes but not THAT huge, to warrant that much coverage, and donation solicitations.
Reply:Huh??? Really, that seems odd to me. Cuz arent u bitchin right now sweety? Plus it was a disaster not just a hurricane. I live in houston so yea I should know. People didnt just loose electricity and have had their homes flooded but it was days before they were even rescued and many of their loved ones died. Iggorant ppl like u are just too stupid and selfish to see beyond things.

Quite whinening like a lil *********....What a F A G
Reply:Well like lil Georgie Porgie said...

Brownie...you did a heck of a job

(Representing our Compassion LESS party)
Reply:Yeah, Governor Blanco didn't declare the place a state of emergency right away, and Ray "what buses?" Nagin wasn't much better. He evacuated himself from the city, then waited until too late to tell everyone to evacuate, and then didn't have a "plan" for dealing with the "difficult to evacuate" folks (poor and elderly, not to mention bedridden and hospitalized). President Bush deployed all kinds of aid (ships and airplanes) but it took time to get down to Louisiana.

Yeah, I watched the news as it was occurring, volunteered with the Red Cross in my city, where many evacuees came... I was amazed at the ridiculous things being flung at Bush. How this was all his fault, because he didn't like black people.

It's also incredible how, here in America, we can't have a natural disaster without blaming a government official. Poo poo happens. And then we deal with it.

At one point, in a conversation with someone, I facetiously said that I was tired of Bush getting all the credit. Katrina was MY fault. I sent it, because I don't like spicy food.

Now, to be fair, Katrina did cause more devastation than Hurricane Andrew. But, also to be fair, the state and local politicians were far more at fault for the ensuing chaos than the federal government was.
Reply:short answer because it runied many lives and killed poor people. i don't blame the president i think he did an great job but any chance us americans can help others lets take it and don't complain about it
Reply:So you're jealous of other hurricane victims. That's pathetic and sad. By the way, Andrew can't even come close to the death and destruction that Katrina caused. There are still people that to this day don't have a home to return. You say you didn't ***** about it but you sure are doing a bunch of bitching and whining on here.
